Tom, Cheryl, Dusty, Butter and Pepper have 2 guest this week: Hunter and Berkely, whose owner is on a boat cruise. Dusty and Pepper do not seem to like Hunter. They hiss at him, but he just ignores them and goes where he wants. Dusty will track Hunter all over the house. Berkely seems pretty mellow and just stays in the plant room. Tom, ever the gracious host. has bought a window shelf for the visitors and Berkely really likes it. With a name like Berkely and all the banana Tom and Cheryl have around the house, I am not surprised. (Mellow Yellow" was a song and single release by Donovan. It reached #2 on the Billboard charts in the U.S. in 1966. The song was rumored to be about smoking dried banana skins, which was believed to be a hallucinogenic drug in the 1960s).
Tom has promised to keep me updated about these guests who stayed not only for dinner, but moved in. I didn't think I'd get to apply the story to "fight like a Kilkenny cat" in a post again so soon! One bit of lore has a thousand Kilkenny cats fighting a thousand cats from the rest of Ireland in a field outside Kilkenny City. All the cats died in battle. This may be a parable based on dissents of the period between the people of the Kilkenny area and other parts of Ireland.
After the Statutes of Kilkenny the city was divided into two townships called Irishtown and Englishtown, a situation that wasn’t uncommon in a country occupied for so long by the English. For religious, cultural and political reasons there were deep divisions between the two groups. This may lend itself to the story of two cats fighting. Because the rights and duties of the two townships hadn’t been made clear by statute this led to three centuries of dispute between the rival municipal bodies that ended in beggaring both of them.
- There once were two cats of Kilkenny
- Each thought there was one cat too many
- So they fought and they hit
- And they scratched and they bit
- 'Til (excepting their nails And the tips of their tails)
- Instead of two cats there weren't any!
I wonder if these two ladies would be willing to sing ancient Irish battle songs and carry signs between rounds if the tensions reach epic proportions. I could be famous on YouTube!
