It is getting to be that time of year. We have almost survived a record breaking winter here in the Northeast, USA. Lots of snow. We have all been bundled up in fleece and puffy jackets for the last few months. Pretty soon those big butts and the waistline spreading over the belt buckle will be exposed for all to see.
I have come to realize what an important element "play" has become in the relationship between pet and owner. I am exhausted after watching Tom and Butter chase the bird on a stick! For those with birds in their home, the bird is a bunch of feathers. For all you arm chair psychologists, Butter chases the bird (feathers), which is held together by string that Tom bounces in the air from the end of a stick. However, if Tom and Butter fight over the bird when I am not around I would not be surprised.
This fall I did a double take when a woman passed me at an intersection while we were both riding our bicycles. I was waiting for the light to change so I could cross the road. She was riding a beautiful cruiser style bike. If you are old enough, think single speed, coaster breaking, JC Higgins bicycle. For the younger set, think over priced "town" bike. Knowing the mind set of my neighbors, this was a beautifully maintained bicycle from the 60's. It was accessorized with a large wicker basket on the handlebars. Sitting upright in the basket was her cat. They both nodded as they passed me by!
It's time to see what, if anything, in our spring wardrobe still fits. Or what might be salvaged if the local tailor has not retired. The wallet and the "soul" also need to be consulted. Which might be less expensive or offer the best odds of success? Should you call Jenny Craig, renew the membership to Weight Watchers or just go find the sneakers hidden somewhere under the bed and start walking?
After all, we certainly don't want to embarrass our pets when they are promenading the neighborhood looking their best. A leisurely walk or playtime with the bird on a stick should be fun, not a health risk for pet or owner.
Pets can be as "Juicy" as their owner! Make sure they are looking their best and have not packed on some extra weight during the winter months. Maybe it is time for a trip to the vet. Sometimes, it is hard to evaluate our pet's weight or overall level of fitness. Pet bling and scents are also readily available. Once our pet is looking and feeling good, they will also want to look and smell really, really good!
