It wasn't a song, with the mournful twilit phantoms who haunt the typical popular song memorializing a loved one. It was a recording, lasting no more than three to four seconds. It was a recording of a single "meow" of his beloved cat Snookie. Tom played it for us, asking if we knew how to transfer it to a more reliable medium. One of us volunteered, touched the wrong button and the "meow" was lost forever.
Time flies, but sometimes not fast enough to heal all wounds. Fortunately, maybe even an out of focus, over or under exposed photo remains to recall a better time; happy memories to soothe the soul.
"I had a little dog" is included in Elegies by William Finn. Finn grew up in Natick, Massachusetts with his parents and siblings. He majored in music at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Finn scored a Broadway success with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for which he wrote both music and lyrics. The show won two Tony Awards in 2005. Finn is a heavily autobiographical textwriter (he always writes his own lyrics). Elegies is as often funny as it is funereal, touching but not painfully tear inducing. It does exactly what religious rituals like the shivas and wakes are supposed to do -- it gives Finn a chance to remember and pay tribute. These friends and colleagues of the composer's who have died over the last two decades are resurrected in playful lyrics bursting with internal rhymes that remember them in all their quirky vitality.
- I had a little dog,
- his name was on his collar
- His ears felt like a rug
- I bought him for a dollar
- I'd bathe him in the sink,
- each day the dog got sicker
- I gave him milk to drink...
- I also gave him liquor.
As a child pets can almost be disposable items. They come and are all too soon gone!
- I had a sussex spanial called him Daniel,
- but it's name was Trudy,
- She died too soon
- Next, I had a Skiperke,
- loved that dog unashamedly
- It was freshly washed!
- ...when it got squashed...
- like a dog in a cartoon...
- Oh, my dog, Stupid little Dandy D.
- I loathed it and it loathed me,
- It lived FOR-EVER!
- Oh, god, life's ironic
- Oh, god, I'm a Catatonic guy...
- why's it only dogs I love that die?
